What is the lifespan of a filter cartridge?
It varies greatly, but in general, here are the typical lifespans for the most popular cartridges:
- Sediment: 3 to 6 months.
- Activated carbon: 2 months to 6 years.
- Reverse osmosis: 6 months to 2 years.
Consult a specialist such as Consult’EAU and/or the manufacturer’s recommendations. Sediment cartridges can be visually inspected on a regular basis.
A cartridge that has been in place for too long can serve as a breeding ground for bacteria, which could make your drinking water microbiologically unsafe.
How do you know when to replace a cartridge?
As a general rule, you should follow the manufacturer’s recommendations. Beyond that, there are indicators that can tell you that your cartridge has reached the end of its service life:
- Decreased water flow or pressure in the house
- Appearance of an unusual taste or odor
Are all cartridges compatible between different systems and manufacturers?

How do you maintain a filter cartridge?
Most cartridges are not reusable and must be replaced. For the system, clean the compartments regularly to prevent deposits.
Can a cartridge remove lead from water?
Specialized cartridges for reducing lead in drinking water are available on the market. Make sure that the cartridge is NSF 53 certified to ensure that it is designed for this purpose.
